Something Emerging From the Underworld in July 2026 – Sun Opposed Pluto From 5 Leo to 5 Aquarius
Because it’s only 10 days away, the Sun is officially forming an opposition to Pluto and conjunction with Jupiter! While still out of sign, it’s coming like an express train! This is the second opposition from early Leo to Pluto in early Aquarius this year. Here the Sun externalizes Pluto’s deep purifying fire. Today we discuss Pluto oppositions.
Venus was the first to oppose Pluto this year, on June 17 from 6 Leo to 6 Aquarius. That was the beginning of the externalization of the Plutonic transformational energies this year, and showed us how to admire differences rather than get caught up in passing perceptions. Also gave us a look at toxic or dishonest people so we could go our own way without argument.
With the Sun powering up the opposition at this time, something very intense is seeking to come to the surface. Only this time, it’s the Sun, the source of Life/Light in this Solar System, coming face to face with the long wave seed power of Pluto. When this happens each year, the Sun begins to sprout new Aquarian seeds of transformational power which will come forth in the future.
This opposition of the Sun at 5 Leo and Pluto at 5 Aquarius is exact 11:55 pm PDT July 26, which is July 27 everywhere east of the west coast. Be careful from July 21 through July 28, as that is the time span when this is most active.
An opposition on that degree axis allows us to see the power in our spiritual ancestry and trust established patterns leading to a greater life. It is illuminating what it takes to create something long lasting through persistent spiritual activity.
The blessing we have is that the Sun is also conjunct Jupiter, sextile Uranus, and trine Neptune, boosting the “6 Pointed Star of Productive Understanding” in the spiritual field and in our lives. This is an extraordinarily productive evolutionary configuration harmonizing with all planets we have in the early degrees of Fire and Air signs.
It also marks a time to focus “right action” in any planets we have between 2-8 degrees of Taurus or Scorpio, as well as 17-23 Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces, which will be under pressure not to get aggravated or insecure. If you have a planet in these zones and begin to feel deep pressure between July 21-28, go inward, see what needs eliminating or encouraged to grow, and put your spiritual truths to the test while maintaining equipoise, observing life’s dramas without getting distracted by or lost in them.
When Venus opposes Pluto, we have to see what is of value and what isn’t, what is frustrating our ability to achieve something or get something done, and be alert to corrosive people and attitudes, including our own which undermine our efforts. When the Sun opposes Pluto, we have to see clearly what the hidden seeds in our life are, and which ones we want to encourage to grow. This illuminates our power to steer the transformational process by tapping into the spiritual field and seeing how to ground Spirit in material ways.
As Pluto rules seeds, both good and bad, as well as the sprouting process, Pluto oppositions challenge us to be clear about the core of things. Each planet has its own “department of labor,” and when they oppose Pluto hidden things come to the surface.
A Venus opposition helps us get to core interpersonal issues and see clearly the interior nature of a person or thing. The Sun helps us get to core life issues and see clearly the interior nature of whatever is in front of us. Mercury oppositions to Pluto help us purify our mind and mental constructs of destructive perceptions.
All Pluto oppositions help us see what needs eliminating or what needs encouragement as it is still developing, and help us purify each department of life. Those include our relationships (Venus), Life (the Sun), interpretations (Mercury), how we do things (Mars), the opportunities and adventures we embrace (Jupiter), or our fears and karmic confrontations (Saturn).
If something or someone has become burdensome, it may be time to re-evaluate your position in that dynamic. This intensifies our life and interactions, so be a bit more cautious in your responses during this opposition.
Oppositions to Pluto also bring an end to things. Venus opposed Pluto may bring the end of an old relationship, or we may remember something which died a long time ago. With this Sun conjunct Jupiter opposed Pluto, it may end an old adventure or truth, or begin a new one.
It can illuminate “opportunities which are not opportunities,” or corrosive influences which could lead us into quests which are against our best interests. It can show us why something is not a good fit for us, or why we need to expand our Jupiter capacity for expansive expression if we want to see the “permanent Truths and patterns” characterizing the Sun/Jupiter conjunction at 7 Leo.
Still, please keep in mind that transit to transit aspects cannot be taken personally, even when they accompany personal changes. Transits show us the patterns and gestalt of the times, and the interrelationships between the transiting planets show us the complexities of various types of forces in our lives. Where the transits fall in our charts shows the “planetary department of labor” is focused in that area of our life, and the aspects those transits make, whether transit to transit or transit to natal, show when energy builds and when it releases, both in general and in our lives specifically.
As this is a transit to transit opposition, the Sun, Jupiter, and Pluto are also making other aspects to planets in our charts. If they are productive or harmonious, then the awareness generated by the opposition will build and stabilize something productive in our lives. If this opposition squares something in our charts, then it forms a T-square which helps us integrate our personality and deal with a deficiency or an excess.
These oppositions from Leo to Aquarius can bring high realization rather than any overt opposition in the life, especially if we have a natal or progressed planet helping us triangulate, using points outside the opposition to resolve the tension. While oppositions generate tensional awareness, we can still use the generic flow and intensification to make progress. While an opposition may feel like we’re “sailing against the wind,” if we find a sextile/trine point, then we can “tack into the wind” and catch the forward momentum in our sails despite the headwinds.
This principle can be applied to other transit to transit oppositions affecting a planet in our chart. For example, If we have something in sextile and trine to the opposition, we can make great progress despite outer circumstances. If we have something that makes a quintile or tredecile to the opposition, we will find high specialization and unique circumstances that should help us to express something “quintessential.” And if the opposition makes a T-square to a planet or angle in our chart, we can use the tension to integrate the power and release it through the void in the configuration.
This is the second of FIVE oppositions to Pluto this year; Venus opposed Pluto in mid-June, Jupiter is opposed Pluto all of July, this Solar opposition is most intense between July 21-28 (amplifying the Jupiter opposition!), Mercury opposes Pluto from August 9-13, and the final one is in early October when Mars opposes Pluto from 4 Leo. That means Venus heralded these oppositions, Sun/Jupiter focuses the expansion for the year (and many to come), Mercury will bring signs and signals about it, and Mars will activate all of the above in October.
So observe what comes to surface in the next two weeks, especially if it’s related to some sort of extreme or “breakout” event. Balance and optimism are required to bring everything into harmonious activity, with a sense of proportion and humor valuable in pointing the way to a more fulfilling life in the future.
Again, if we are aware of the potential negatives of Jupiter opposed Pluto to bring exaggerated lies and dishonest circumstances, we can use the Sun/Jupiter sextile Uranus and trine to Neptune to see the larger patterns of future evolution, and ride the Solar Fire of Leo into a stronger heart and clearer vision of what we want to come forth in the future. This is a good time to shed old “big ideas” which are not attainable, and learn how to sidestep useless disputes while shining a big light on what’s permanent and what’s not.
So while the opposition provides awareness and the need to focus on eliminating all which is frustrating our ability to accomplish something or see an important part of our power to come to surface, there are also other factors going on which may affect us more profoundly in other areas. This period also has a productive Mercury sextile Venus, helping us coordinate areas ruled by those planets.
With Leo as the sign externalizing Pluto’s future vision, it’s a time to allow the spontaneity we’ve cultivated in the past to come forth, and create as much festivity as we can. This launch of a year of Jupiter in Leo should help us enjoy life more fully, be more expressive, and find opportunities to free our hearts within a great Light/Life.
In any case enjoy the opening, enjoy the freedom, enjoy the blessings you have already begun to receive, and open to new fiery and/or creative initiatives.
